What is an Anaesthesia Machine and what is it used for ?

Anaesthesia is the state of temporary loss of sensation and consciousness.

Anaesthesia machine is a medical device used to generate and mix a fresh gas flow of medical gases and inhalational anaesthetic agents for the purpose of maintaining anaesthesia.


The modern anaesthesia machine comprises of: mechanical ventilator, breathing system, suction equipment, gas flow generating device and patient monitoring device


To put it simply, humans use oxygen as a very important component of their daily functioning and use it for various purposes and releases carbon dioxide. The function of an anaesthesia machine is to deliver oxygen (O2) and anaesthetic gases removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the breathing system and provide controlled ventilation.
